by Robert Irwin

Prayer-cushions of the flesh. The dream of monsters produces reason. It was one of the forms of dying classified in the books, for a reason he had not yet fathomed, as ‘the Death of the Just Man’

Prayer-cushions of the flesh. Chapter One. Man in a cage. The women lay heaped like pack-ice round the walls of the Cage. As Orkhan sat shivering in the courtyard, he imagined the ladies of the Harem at ease beyond the Cage’s walls. It was one of the forms of dying classified in the books, for a reason he had not yet fathomed, as ‘the Death of the Just Man’. Orkhan was as diligent in his study of death as he was in his thinking about women. There were still hours to go before the sun would have risen above the walls of the Cage, but it had been hot all night and Orkhan was not shivering from cold.

Irwin also chuckles away any criticisms of his book; twice in the novel a character states that there doesn't have to be a "meaning" to a tale, that the pleasure derived from the telling (and the reading or hearing) of it is "meaning" enough. True, but tell that to the fundamentalists of the world.

Robert Irwin, Magnus Irvin. Both are endlessly delightful, but one learns nothing from either. Anadil was waiting outside. She carried a parasol and was wearing a silk pink robe and gloves. There you are at last. Have you been sporting with one of the animal girls? All the princes have been the same. They were like animals too and when they come out of the Cage all they could think about was rubbing flesh against flesh. I say that it is the job of we Harem girls to school you men in the arts of a more courtly love.

Prayer-Cushions of the Flesh book. Robert Irwin goes rollerblading most days and takes part in rollerblading marathons. His other pursuits include juggling, pinball and cooking. He has published six novels: The Arabian Nightmare (1983), The Limits of Vision (1986), The Mysteries of Algiers (1988), Exquisite Corpse (1995), Prayer-Cushions of the Flesh (1997) and Satan Wants Me (1999).

Prayer-Cushions of the Flesh. Author: Robert Irwin. The virginal hero of the tale, Prince Orkhan, escapes from the Cage of the Imperial Harem, in which the sons of the sultan are imprisoned, and finds himself hailed by the Harem’s concubines as their new Sultan. He is immediately caught up in the excesses and perversions of the harem. But evil flourishes in a bed of boredom and, after allowing the Viper to drink at the Tavern of the Perfume-Makers, Orkhan enters a maze of complicated relationships, all orchestrated by the devotees of the Prayer-Cushion movement.

Prayer-Cushions of the Flesh is a masterful blend of historical fact, dark humor, and robust fantasy. The novel sets a furious pace, flitting from one odd room and liaison to the next, giving Orkhan (and the reader) little time to puzzle out exactly who’s in charge. Part erotica, part serious political exploration, this book will titillate some readers and befuddle others. To read this book, upload an EPUB or FB2 file to Bookmate.

The virginal hero of the tale, Prince Orkhan, escapes from The Cage of the Imperial Harem, in which the sons of the sultan are imprisoned, and finds himself hailed by the Harem's concubines as their new Sultan.

The women of harem are teaching the new sultan how to die through love  . From a publisher committed to literary fantasy comes a work worthy of the category from Robert Irwin whose knowledge of Arab culture allows him to fabricate an Arabian Night that is memorably erotic and very funny. Homosexual giraffes, congress with crodiles, a phalomancer who has a sideline in vulvascopy - what a curious cornucopia!
