Susan Holms is experiencing an identity crisis on her fortieth birthday that causes her to question her life generally and to take steps that will change her life forever. She has married into a wealthy family in Atlanta, and her marriage has become a sham due to her husband's love affairs. Susan decides to visit her high school friend, Jackie Colder, in Hawaii. In Lanai, Susan finds that Jackie and Ron are divorced, yet living together on a sailboat named Atlanta. While in Hawaii, Susan meets Craig Stevenson, a handsome, young doctor doing research in a medical clinic. The doctor teaches Susan many spiritual aspects of her inner self, and he soon falls in love with her. Susan, however, learns to care for Ron Colder, eventually falling in love with him after they survive a terrible storm at sea in which Jackie is swept overboard. When Susan leaves Lanai, she promises to meet him in Atlanta to plan their marriage. In the airport lounge Susan encounters Craig, who proposes that they meet there again in ten months if Susan finds it in her heart to love him. Susan and Ron are married and begin a life together that is centered around his dentistry practice in Hilton Head Island. It is a wonderful time for Susan that ends abruptly when he is killed in a car accident on I-75. Susan is plunged into despair, awash in self-pity, until Ron's spirit returns to help her endure until spring. Then Susan returns to Waikiki Beach to scatter Ron's ashes in the Pacific. After doing so and in the process releasing Ron and negative emotions such as her grief, Susan goes to the Honolulu Airport with doubt that Craig would be there, yet he is waiting there as promised. When they meet and kiss, Susan knows love has again entered her heart, for her one life is not enough.
