I am not a professional electrician but I do have some electronic and electrical background. This book will guide you through planning and implementing wiring projects that will be safe and functional. I buy a new copy of the updated code every time I plan on doing a new project. Not a lot of stuff changes at this level most times, but the price of this book is cheap insurance for the safety of your shop or home. It is very easy reading for someone who knows the basics about electricity, but for someone with no knowledge beyond the light switch, it may take a while to get the most out of it. Do-it-yourselfers that have replaced plugs, switches, outlets, and have mustered the courage to turn of the power to the house and peek inside the main electrical panel will find they have a whole new understanding of their electrical system with this book. If you are in the planning stage of a new addition or a workshop, you should get this book so you can make informed decisions about your project if for no other reasons. Well written and organized. This could be a sole source text book for a middle or high school electricians shop course.

I have been using this book (in several editions) for 40 years. It is clear and directly related to the practical side of how to do electrical wiring for homes, farms, and commercial. Some math, lots of examples, and clear practical explanations.

If you are remodeling, rewiring, or just looking over the shoulder of contractors, this book will give you the practical knowledge you need to get things done.
It begins at a beginner level and quickly takes the reader to a fairly advanced level.
The difference in the National Electrical Codes does not make much of a difference in the practical side of getting the wiring done in a safe, efficient manner.

Good book. Answers a lot of questions. I like it.
This is a great book for getting background information in the world of electricity. I'm only a few chapters into it but I find the material to be relevant despite the fact it was published it the early 80's. I gave it 4 stars, if this was the latest edition I might have given it 5. What I like most about what I have read so far is that it gives great comparisons to help visualize what volt, watts, amps, and other electrical terms are. It also has really good insight on electrical code and how codes are adopted into local ordinances. It is a technical book, a lot of people would probably give it 1 star for this reason. This book is more for detail oriented people that want to know more about wiring from an engineering standpoint. This is not a book with a lot of illustrations on how to wire a house, if you want a book like that go to your local big box hardware store and get a DIY book on wiring. This book helps to explain the why first then the how to later on. Once you understand the why the -how to- comes naturally.
