I wish someone had told me how much of this book was pulled directly from Literacy in American Lives. Had I known that, I wouldn't have wasted my time and money. If you're looking for a quick introduction to Brandt's work, this is your book. If not, skip it and get Literacy in American Lives, which contains the same subject matter but is much more thorough.
