I was given this book by someone who asked me to read it and let them know what I thought. It was a bit of a surprise given that my degrees I hold come from other fields but it was nice to be asked.

Let me begin by establishing the audience for such a book. Clearly it is meant for those who are reading for degrees in communications and related fields but it is more, to my mind at least, for undergraduate students who are aiming to do some postgraduate study with a view to becoming a researcher in the field, or, more likely to seek a career in the communications industry in one form or another.

This is a no nonsense handbook, written by a number of collaborators despite which, a consistent level of writing has been achieved. It takes the reader through the full gamut of aspects of research and research methods in the field and the last section is devoted to techniques and methods in differing subsets.

Material is concise and well presented and aims to provide an overview of the process by which research is carried out. It seems to expect a certain level of mathematical and statistical literacy from the reader while alerting the same to the requirements needed in order to become proficient in the actual practice and skill development of undertaking research.

The comprehensive nature of this manual is also demonstrated by the acknowledgement of the qualitative as well as quantative aspects of research depending on what is to be studied and also introducing terms and concepts which may need further work in in order to pursue a particular profession.

The only cautionary note I would offer would be the essentially individualistic nature of the profession of researcher. While communities of researchers can provide professional support, the immersion of the person seeking to carry out a research project can be daunting at times. That said the purpose of the book is fulfilled entirely and I will heartily recommend it to potential graduate students. I would like to see a newer edition though.
Without knowing what to expect, my reluctance was quickly erased and I've not put the book down since the first chapters. Well sequenced, it's like you can't wait to get to the next chapter.
Fantastic communications research text! Very easy to follow.
Too hard to read b/c they use different terms
