What I liked about this book is that it goes into areas that most US History books ignore or gloss over. What I understand about this book is that it must have a limited number of pages, and because of that it never really goes into detail about any period or event. Most periods or events are covered in 2 pages or less. It also requires a parent or educator to explain things. I say that because it breaks the Civil War or Revolutionary War, etc. into small bits and pieces. It may focus on a bill and then a battle, but never gives an overall synopsis of the event to tie it all together. The bite sized nuggets are great for maintaining interest among teens and hitting on oft ignored topics, but a summary or overview is still required. My child left this book knowing lots of neat facts, but unable to give summaries of the events leading up to, during or after key historical events in our history.

I used this book for my homeschool history curriculum and my son loved it. It's easy to understand, interesting, and something he could read himself (he's in fourth grade). One of my favorite history texts and one I will keep, even after he's outgrown the recommended ages.

When I had to homeschool my son for 4th grade, we used this book. He is autistic and assignments had to be shortened for him. The one page reads with the one page worksheet was perfect for him.

He's now in high school and will be doing American History again for 10th grade next year. He's back in public schools, but this summer we will be focusing on preparing him for what his classes will be next year.

That's the great thing about History, while in school and even in college, you relearn the same stuff over and over, and it's always relevant.

So for this summer this being paired with the old Liberty Kids cartoons and computer game will be very helpful in familiarizing him to subject matters he'll be studying in his 10th grade American History class in August.

I'm fine with purchasing the workbook yet again. Don't know of any others out there.

The book itself is a good book. I would recommend it for 2nd - 5th grade. The language is very easy, some of the "Show what you know" activities are a little too simple, but this book is mainly a text book, not a work book. As homeschoolers we use it as a trace to follow, but we fill in the gaps with other, more complete history books.

HOWEVER!! I bought this book from Jenson books Inc. "The description was Condition: Used - Very Good - A well-cared-for item that has seen limited use but remains in great condition. The item is complete, unmarked, and undamaged, but may show some limited signs of wear. Item works perfectly. Pages and dust cover are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine is undamaged."
However, entire chapters are missing! (pg 120-133 Eli Whitney's Cotton gin, Lewis and Clarke Explore the Louisiana Purchase, Boats on the Mississippi), (168-185, the ENTIRE Civil war!), (189-199 Battle of Gettysburg, Abraham Lincoln The Man).
Since we are working on the book, I asked the seller if he can replace it with a complete copy. Once received the complete copy I can return the incomplete copy. I am waiting for a reply.

This book is fantastic. I got it for my 9yo (3rd grade, homeschooled) and I wasn't expecting much honestly because most history books for elementary are just god awful. BUt this one is nice, lots f illustrations, good info, and she loves reading it. I recommend this to any kiddo who needs a history book

As homeschoolers, we struggled to find a history book that would capture my son's attention. This one focusing more on one person's story and how it fit into a historical event was perfect. Was a little disappointed that there wasn't more "meat" to it, but then again, I think it was good for elementary kids. And apparently the information provided was done in a way that my son could remember, as he pointed out some cool facts to me, while we were at a museum later! Thanks!

I used this at home with my son since schools teach basically nothing on American history.
Again, I just love these books. What a great way for a kid to learn. They read a little, get to right in their own book, not have to carry around pages their writing on that they will eventually lose. Really, the public school system should use these and they're probably cheaper than the books they buy. Also, one nice feature, they put everything in a timeline where it lists the different units they will be studying and it really helps kids to understand what order things happened in.
