"You make dessert," instructed the assignment for the community French dinner. The quest: dessert recipes that were simple, clearly French, ingredients available in the small Hawaii town in which I live, enough of the here's how hints & asides that make things work, and an affordable book.

Got it! "Simple French Desserts" aims at the variety likely to be served in a good bistro, café or neighborhood restaurant. Aims, and hits the target in a perfect wedding of the chef (Jill O'Connor), the photographer (Richard Erskine), and the glory that is France.

There are over 50 dessert recipes, arranged in four sections:

1. Cookies, tea cakes and pastries (23 recipes) such as Almond Tuiles, Chocolate-Hazelnut Madeleines, and exquisite Profiteroles

2. Tarts and cakes (14 recipes) including the superb Goat-cheese cake with glazed figs, Apple Galette, and Tarte Tatin

3. Hot, cold, and creamy (17 recipes). Among these are stars like Caramel Pears Belle Helene (sumptuous!), Coeur a la Crème, Blackberry Cassis Sorbet, and Crème Brulee

4. Building blocks---not exactly stand alone recipes, but essential components well explained, including Chcolate Ganache, Raspberry Coulis, and Sweet Pastry Dough.

Everything I have made from this book has worked without fussiness. Love it!

Reader Alerts? This is not for the cook/chef who has mastered every recipe in "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" or whose hundred book library of cookbooks are at hand in their own special case in the kitchen. Such accomplished chefs may find these recipes already in their repertoires. HOWEVER, for a competent but not expert cook who wants to expand the repertoire or quickly fulfill a "make a French dessert" need---look no further.

This is the dessert cookbook I find myself going to over and over and over again. I have not had a single recipe fail in any way, and I've gone through at least half of them in the book. The directions are clear and detailed, and there are discussions of all techniques which cooks may be unfamiliar with. The chocolate souffle is my favorite recipe and has never failed to produce dinner-party-stopping results. Also provides recipes for macaroons, my favorite french cookie, and a variety of custards. I really wish they would reprint this book as I would give out more copies as gifts.

It came sooner than I expected. I bought this book for my teen cousin who is in love with French culture. She loves the book! The book came in good condition. There were a few marks on the front but you could barely see them! I am pleased! This made my cousin's Christmas!

My roommate owns this cookbook and I've now made every recipe and variation in here save 4 or 5 (getting to those soon). I've had excellent results with literally every single recipe. I've fed these treats to friends and family with nothing but glowing reviews. I've never encountered a cookbook where literally every single recipe is good. I'm not knowledgeable about French baking/desserts, but suffice it to say an actual French person complimented me on my macaroons.
One comment for potential buyers - don't be fooled by the title of this book. While I had no trouble whatsoever following the recipes, I wouldn't describe most of them as simple. Perhaps they are simple relative to other French desserts, I'm not sure.
Anyway, I will surely use this book forever as my go to impress-people-dessert-cookbook!

Recently returned from France all "fired up" to make the wonderful treats I had experienced there. Alas, I could find very few recipes for my favorites, then I happened upon this just released book and it is the answer to all my prayers. It has absolutely all of the Parisian classics, from financiers to macaroons complete with fillings! The instructions look simple and easy to read and I am most anxious to get started. I am ordering a copy for my sister tdoay. Thank you Jill O'Connor!
I've had this book for almost 10 years now. No longer a young bachelor, and now formally trained by famous chefs, I still pull out Jill's book if I want to really impress guests. Her instructions are clear and the recipes are dangerously delicious!

Her Creme Brulee is hugely popular with my guests, friends, and family. They call it "best-in-town", and I agree. Every single recipe in this book is a gem. Her building blocks are perfectly designed for you to make your own desire, and it's never failed to deliver an absolute YUM!
