He was the only apostle who escaped a violent death The Quarryman's Wife: a novel abfab.

What a delightful debut! A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California, reminds me of the classic romantic comedies where two stubborn, independent people keep denying what everyone else knows is true: that they were meant for each other. I found myself eagerly turning the pages, wanting to see what was going to happen to Ellie and Miles next.

This latest debut, A Bride Opens Shop in El Dorado, California, is making my list of awesome first books and has earned its spot in my permanent library. Going into this book I knew that I'd probably enjoy it simply because I've really enjoyed all the "destination" romances that have been published by Barbour but It's not often that so many debut novels impress me but so far this year I've read a ton (probably a ton, literally!) that I loved and would highly recommend for any. romance readers.

Simple fellow
I liked the feeling of being in the area; very well done on that part. For most of the book, it seemed the characters had appropriate mindset for the era, and there wasn't really anything jarring that pulled me back to the present. The writing was easy to follow and descriptive. Sometimes the 'internal' dialogue sounded more like notes for the author, or sort of like a big nudge to remind the reader of the individual characters' motivations. Tildy was perhaps my favorite character, maybe second to Hank. Or Abe. But why the low rating? I didn't like Miles. Hardly at all. The only thing that kept me liking him was his interaction with Tildy. And I didn't like Ellie. Hardly at all. The only thing that kept me liking her was her interaction with the Talbot Twins. My biggest disappointment, however, was that the characters didn't seem to have a relationship with the Heavenly Father, and that they thought too much about the other person's attractions, with less emphasis on their character, and even less on their relationship with Christ. Definitely not how I'd recommend operating a relationship in real life. Best part were the descriptions of goods in the store and the town. I feel like I visited El Dorado back in the day. =)

Elenora leaves her harsh father to become a partner in a California mercantile, but Miles, the owner, didn't realize she was female, and changes his mind.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 4.5 -- Plot has unique elements and no major holes, but a few shaky bits and/or a slight lack of focus. There's a lot to like about the story, but although the battle of the sexes and competition between stores was entertaining, it did get a bit repetitive for me. Things dragged on well past where I was wanting them to kiss and make up already. Setting is clear, believable, and consistent. Points of reference for time passing were worked into the story quite well.

Characters: 3.5 -- Main characters are relatable, realistic, interesting, and dynamic. Elenora grew up doubting her worth as a person, but circumstances now let her prove her capabilities in several arenas. Miles tends to act and speak without thinking, and they clash again and again before realizing they love each other. Some minor characters have depth, while others may be slightly stereotyped or simplified. Tildy is great, and we do get to know some of the minor characters pretty well. Relationships between characters are not especially well developed, but what is there is generally good. Felt like there was more conflict than relationship building between Miles and Ellie.

Mechanics and Writing: 4.5 -- Few, if any, typos or word errors. Good use of POV (Elenora and Miles). Generally skillful writing.

Redeeming Value: 4 -- Partially focused uplifting themes or lessons. Elenora learns that God really does hear her prayers and care about her, and can cause things that seemed bad to turn out to be good. Miles learns to listen to God better, and not to discredit or underestimate people based on preconceived ideas. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, though there's a fair bit of shooting guns, both for target practice and in several encounters with an outlaw.

Personal Enjoyment: 3 -- I liked it. It was enjoyable and entertaining. I wouldn’t mind re-reading it someday, but it’s not a priority.

When I read this book I was amazed that this was the authors first book! It is so well written and from the first page I had a hard time putting it down! I haven't always been a historical book fan, but have become one lately and books like this is the reason why. The characters were so real and the story moved at a good pace and I found myself thinking about it when I had to put it down for a while. Keli is on her way to becoming a best selling author right up there with the best of them. If you haven't read her books {She has two and the third is coming out March 1, 2016, then get this book and read it, you will be glad you did! Beautiful story!

When I first started this book I did not know what to expect. My first impression, from the title alone, was not great. The title seems uninspired and kind of boring. The actual book, however, was pretty good. Ellie and her daughter travel across the country so she can become a partner in business. As is usual in a historical romance things go awry. Ellie is stubborn to her core. She is determined to make herself a successful business owner no matter what. She argues and bickers with the gentleman across the street, Miles, daily. Her daughter is a happy child who forges a friendship with everyone including Miles.
This book was a great read. I read it over the course of two evenings, staying up into the wee hours of the morning to have some quiet time to read without interruptions. I love historical fiction and the Wild West days.

I bought this book full price for my own reading pleasure.

A fun novel set in frontier California in the town of El Dorado. The feisty Elenora travels to town with her daughter to take a position as joint owner of a successful mercantile expecting to start a new life for herself and her child. When the shop owner, Miles, finds out she's female he'll have no part of her in his shop. She opens her own shop across the street, setting up a fierce competition. They each strive to outdo the other by running contests and stunts to draw in business. Though they share similar interests, including their expertise as violinists, and a deep faith in God, they fight their feelings for each other. A series of events, both life threatening and hilarious, continuously bring them together. A story that will stay with you long after you turn the last page. Highly recommended for anyone that likes a well thought out, well written, story with endearing characters.
