This book provides a good corrective to the many hagiographies that have been written about Billy Graham. As I read through these pages, I cringe to remember that I once thought of Graham as a sincere, honest fellow, though terribly misguided. It becomes evident that much of what is happening in politics today was aided and abetted by the preacher to the presidents, and the American public fell for it hard.

Cecil Bothwell, The Prince of War: Billy Graham’s Crusade for a Wholly Christian Empire, Asheville, NC, 2007. Cecil Bothwell’s wonderful, angry, muck-raking The Prince of War is a biography of the man who tested the uncertain terrain, took steps forward, made some retreats, and paved the way for 24/7 Christian Reaction. Should we say Christian Fascist the way the Horowitzniks and Hitchensites say Islamo-Fascism?) The ruling class always needs church leaders to anoint reaction. Billy Graham was second to no one for several decades (1949-1981) at this.

I have shared scores of this book to friends in the past eight years, and it a book every churchman and historian should read.

The book is good on exposing that Graham doggedly pursued Presidential attention by fawning and praising each one privately. He also is exposed as an ant-Semite and a warmonger. I wish more material had been examined to expose his incredible wealth while feigning poverty.

Fair enough.

More stars would have been given had the book not been a tad over the top.

Insights into the darker, less admirable facets of Billy Graham's character... Not the "saint" that his organization and the mass media would have us believe... Basically a war monger during the era of the Korean and Vietnamese wars

Given as a gift to a former Ashville.NC resident who had no clue to how the whole Graham empire was built and how it worked. Graham had far too much influence nationally and laid the groundwork for the spiritual extortion of the hell-fire and damnation era. I had read it before I purchased a copy as a gift, plus Bothwell's autobiography. He is a good author and has the scars to show he has earned the insight into the world of the religious façade.

I thought he was the best of worst, but this book was revealing: Graham was everywhere starting before I was born. From the eradication of cultures in the Western Hemisphere to Iran Contra to the religious crusade atmosphere post-9/11, Billy Graham was there. He functioned as a quasi-official ambassador sent by presidents. His racist and anti-Semitic words are recorded on the Nixon tapes. Graham’s actions can be traced from the beginning as a grand bargain, aided by the wealthy, to make America a Christian nation in violation of the Constitution. He was the first of the worst, the creator of a path followed by Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and hundreds more. The author references Graham’s fear that some would mistake him for an Elmer Gantry; that’s no mistake Mr. Graham: you are worse. Read the book. Check the footnotes.

The book looks good, but the Kindle formatting is borked in a big way. Unless you want to piece sentences together like a puzzle, it's basically unreadable. Unfortunately, I didn't discover this until 10 days after I bought it--3 days past Amazon's meager 7-day return policy, so I'm stuck with it. Very unhappy to be ripped off.

This book is fantastic ! ! ! Every American and every person in the world should read and understand the true story of Billy Graham. I would recommend this to everyone!
Spreading the gospel to and for the State - right in your face - is told by Mr. Bothwell in a most articulate, supported chronology. Finally, we get to see religion's influence on our State's affairs - regardless of whether we ask for it, want it -or - agree to the proselytizing. Mr. Bothwell clearly expresses our government's refusal to abide by the "establishment" clause of the First Amendment of "our" Constitution.

I'm glad I read the book on my Kindle - allowing for the many trips to the dictionary - and adding to my own quiver.
