MY OWN SPIRITUAL JOURNEY BEGAN when I picked up a copy of Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist. Similarly, the following twelve books have been largely influential for spiritual seekers all over the world. It wasn’t the first New Age book I had read, but for the first time, I felt open to receiving the guidance within those pages. I don’t know whether I was just in the right frame of mind when I came across this book or whether it was Coelho’s parable about life that spoke to me, but from then on, I felt compelled to take Coelho’s words to heart, and look inside myself. While some are more timeless.

As someone who has been guiding people through the catacombs of their own lives for decades, Francis Dorff, O. Praem. is uniquely qualified to tell stories that evoke personal experiences of the treasures residing within each of us. Readers may recognize.

None of us come to Christ with strong spiritual qualities; we all begin our spiritual journey with Christ as spiritual babies. It was no different for Peter and the Twelve. Because Peter was such a dominant figure in the gospels, we have the advantage of tracking his spiritual development as a believer from beginning to end. The natural tendency for most believers is to somehow think of the Twelve as being spiritual giants right from the start - but nothing was further from the truth. So as we carefully traverse the roads Peter traveled, each of us will be able to identify more closely with.

For some reason, this book does not pop up on Amazon when you search on Peter France -- in fact, it is not even listed under its correct title, which is JOURNEY: A Spiritual Odyssey. But after having tracked it down, I just had to put one more review on here. I cannot recommend it highly enough -- his description of his intelligent life-long agnosticism, search for truth, and inability to make mental peace with religious "belief" is one that many people will be able to relate to. So if all that's the case, then why and how does he end up becoming Orthodox? That is where the unique part of the story comes in. This book is so worth the read for anyone interested in a beautifully written, intelligent, and absolutely remarkable (yet, it could be any of us) story of coming home.
As a disillusioned and no longer practising Catholic, I read this book after receiving it as a gift from a friend and was inspired to find out more about Orthodoxy. A self-confessed but well read atheist, France was so drawn to the Orthodox faith that he had himself baptised on the island of Patmos (a beacon for the true Orthodox faith).

This book rings true for non-believers and frustrated believers alike and should whet your appetite to read more about Orthodoxy. After this book, personally, I would recommend 'The Orthodox Church' by Timothy Ware.
