John R. Stott is rector emeritus of All Souls Church in London and has a worldwide ministry as Bible expositor, conference speaker, and writer. His other books include Basic Christianity, Christ the Controversialist, and Understanding Christ. Stott gives us a true introduction, from general themes of Old and New Testaments and even examining the region in which the Bible took place. These geographical sections, in particular, began to drag for me. I recommend the book for someone who wants an introduction to the Bible. Early on, Stott tells us that the Bible is not to be treated as literature.

John Stott's Understanding the Bible is a really useful guide for Bible readers. In it, he provides a theological overview as well setting the historical and geographical context for its stories. For instance, he summarises very well the long, tortuous and complex history of the Jewish people from the Exodus from Egypt until the Coming of Christ. It seems strange now to be how anyone could tackle the Old Testament without this understanding.

This book answers foundational questions: Who wrote the Bible? .

This book answers foundational questions: Who wrote the Bible? What is its message? Why is it thought to be a holy book? How does one read and interpret it? Best of all, though, you'll broaden your vision of Jesus Christ, the focal point of Scripture. To read this book, upload an EPUB or FB2 file to Bookmate.

This book answers foundational questions: Who wrote the Bible? What is its message? Why is it thought to be a "holy" book? How does one read and interpret it? Best of all, though, you'll broaden your vision of Jesus Christ, the focal point of Scripture. How? By better understanding the geographical, religious, and historical concerns that shaped the world in which he lived. You'll see Jesus as never before: both as a man of his times and culture, and as the culmination of a divine providence that prepared the way for the ministry of the Messiah.

I highly recommend this excellent book by the distinguished Dr. John R.W. Stott of England. - His interpretations are easy to read and enjoy. This is an excellent overview of the Bible. It is a book to give or share with those who find the Bible difficult to understand. All of Dr. Stott's books, including his inspiring memoir, should be in everyone's library, in my opinion.

Dr. Stott's life was spent preaching and teaching in England and thruout the world with joy and love for humanity and for the environment. I am so glad to have been introduced to this amazing man thru his writings. Those who wish to learn more about Christianity and the Bible will find meaning and purpose in this book.
